From submission to seal.

Four steps. Four cycles a year. Every book judged on its merits by a rotating panel of librarians, illustrators, and educators.

Submit

Upload your interior and cover PDFs through our author portal. Pay the entry fee. We handle the rest.

Initial Review

Submissions are reviewed for eligibility, including verification of publication dates.

03

Judging Panel

A panel of three independent judges evaluates submissions based on craft, originality, and resonance.

04

Award

Three books per cycle are named Finalists and advance to the annual Grand Prize selection.

The First Stories Prize honors newly released picture books on a seasonal cycle. First Stories Featured opens our recognition to exceptional books already in the world.

§ 05 · Ready when you are

Submissions for the Spring cycle close in 14 days.

Books published between January 1 and March 31, 2026 are eligible for the Spring cycle. Entry fee is $69. Winners are announced May 1.
